    Truffle Days in Istria

The truffle is the supreme delicacy that had been enjoyed by the Mesopotamian rulers 4000 years ago, and it is still one of the most prestigious foodstuffs in world gastronomy. This intense flavour royal mushroom was known to the ancient Greeks and the Roman emperors, and it was also served at the French court and among the Austro-Hungarian aristocracy. It is very rare and it grows only in several locations in Europe - in some parts of France and Italy and in Istria, favoured by mild climate, small temperature variations and grey clay soil.

The white and the black truffles have their natural habitat in the Istrian truffle \'Bermuda\' triangle between Pazin, Buje and Buzet, especially in the valley of the river Mirna and in the Motovun Forest. They grow underground, and they are searched after by specially trained dogs.

October is the top season of the white truffles, which are also the most expensive and the most valuable truffles. At that time, numerous events are held every weekend to celebrate this indisputable king of mushrooms in Livade, the well-known truffles centre near Motovun. But, even before and after this period, throughout most of the autumn, Istria lives in the rhythm of truffles with the abundance of festivities dedicated to this noble mushroom.

The guests that come from the whole region are presented with the typical truffle dishes: fuži, pljukanci, gnocchi, fritada and various meat combinations. There are also many exhibitions and fairs, with plenty of excellent opportunities to meet the world of this magic, aromatic tuber known for its aphrodisiac features.

    Zigante Truffle Days

    Truffle Days 2017

In the heart of the Motovun forest, one of the most important areas for harvesting the white truffle in Istria, Zigante Tartufi Days are being held each year. This long manifestation is being held over ten weeks during autumn.

That is expensive tuber that is literally measured in grams of gold like a magnet for visitors, according to local and foreign guests from Slovenia, Italy, Germany, Austria and even distant Japan, who are constant visitors to this unique project.

It was this event celebrated the Livade as a world center of the Istrian white truffles, and turned this place into a single marketplace, only one of its kind in the country.  Truffle Fair and Exhibition is an ideal opportunity for exploring and tasting truffles and its presentation.

In addition to the absolute king of Istrian cuisine, here you can find other indigenous products, which in its tradition and quality attract interested tasters and consumers from around the world: wine, olive oil, cheeses, honey, brandy-herb and other traditional Istrian products.

The gastronomic offer is the result of collaboration with the best wineries and olive oil. For all visitors entering the fair is free of charge.

    Opening hours:

We invite you to spend the first day of autumn, 23rd of September, in the best possible way – walking through the beautiful autumn panorama of north-west Istria, through the vineyards and olive groves by the sea and to taste the fruits that nature, with the help of diligent hands, offers so generously. We invite you to the first Wine and Walk by the sea!

Spend an entire day in nature during its most beautiful and bountiful time and enjoy the perfect combination of a recreational walk around Novigrad, following roads alongside local vineyards, olive groves and other attractive locations, and an eno-gastronomic experience at several wine&food points, along a nearly 8 km route.

The start is set in the morning hours near Novigrad’s Aminess Maestral Hotel where you will register, receive a tasting glass, voucher, a map of the route and all necessary instructions. You will then start your adventure walking by the sea and the old city walls which will lead you to the town’s little port known as Mandrač, in the historic centre of the town. This is where your first wine&food point awaits you, near a wine cellar that dates back several decades. Here you will be welcomed and provided an introduction for what is to come on this food & wine & walking experience. The stroll continues along the promenade to the hinterland of Novigrad passing through vineyards, olive groves, small forests and other attractive natural sights.

There will be several other wine&food points along the route where you will enjoy wines and bite-sized delicacies. The winemakers whose wines you will taste along the route will greet you at the refreshing stops and this will provide an opportunity to learn more about the top-quality wines you will be enjoying throughout the day.

The return to Novigrad and your final destination in the historical heart of the town, at the beautiful Novigradske biskupije Park, is scheduled some time late in the afternoon or early evening. It is here that the participants and other visitors can expect more eno-gastronomic mingling with wine and food tasting, music, and a fair of local agricultural products and souvenirs. A small raffle is also organised for all the participants. If your lucky number comes up, you will take home a nice memorabilia from this inspirational all-day event, aside from the unique experience of the first Wine&Walk by the sea.

    Bela nedelja - White Sunday

    Folk festival

The ancient town of Plomin has proudly overlooked Plomin Bay for centuries as testimony to the people who have created its culture and life as we know it today.
On the feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, the Plomin Parish celebrates its patron saint, together with White Sunday. Traditionally every year people come from all areas to renew old friendships and to take a break from their hectic lives, to enjoy programs filled with songs and a number of sporting events.

White Sunday is a traditional religious and folk festival, which has meant a lot to the people of Plomin since ancient times, and is celebrated on the first Sunday in October. The day of festivities begins with a Mass in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whilst during the day entertainment and sporting events alternate between themselves. It used to mark Plomin’s big fair day, when the town was visited by people from Rijeka and from Trieste too, presenting and selling their own products.
Although the fair tradition has been lost, White Sunday has continued to maintain its importance for local inhabitants and everyone with Plomin in their hearts.

    8th Teran and Truffle Festival

    Truffle Days 2017

When Istria is taken over by autumn tones, its landscapes gleam in hundreds of shades of yellow, orange and red. From the top of the hill, this autumn patchwork is watching majestically over by Motovun, a medieval town overlooking the Motovun forest, the River Mirna and its stunning valley.

In October, TeTa, a one-day exhibition and tasting of Teran wine and truffles Is held here.

Teran is an old Istrian variety, which dominated the Istrian peninsula around a hundred years ago and was first mentioned 600 years ago. Due to its strong and robust flavour, the autochthonous Istrian wine is delightful served with prosciutto, cheese and meat and game based dishes, while its ruby red colour perfectly blends with the autumn colours of Istria.
Besides Teran, the equal star of the festival is the truffle, an underground Istrian treasure without which today’s gourmand cuisine would be unimaginable.

The Festival brings together Istrian producers of Teran who want to give it the importance it deserves so that the culinary experience is complete with truffle dishes, of course, with emphasis on those that are best paired with Teran.

    Štriga! Istrian rogaine challenge

Rogaining is an orienteering sport of long distance, it includes movement strategies and navigation between checkpoints by using the different types of maps.

Checkpoints can bring different number of points which depends on difficulty of finding it, so teams must develop a strategy (for example, to get to as many checkpoints as possible of lower significance.

Teams move by walking (or running), use maps and compass for orienteering on the terrain which vary from the open one to the flat and further to the terrain located in the hilly woods. Central spot, for which rogaine use the word “hash house” is a place where competitors can have a cooked meal and teams can return to it whenever they want to eat, rest or sleep.

Teams move by their own speed according to their level of training so this sport is open to all ages, from children to the seniors. Usually, the rogaine race duration is 24 hours but the race can as short as 3, 6, 8, 12 or 15 hours.

    Martinje - St. Martin

Each November, when the sweet juice of new wine is born, the town of Momjan celebrates the Feast Day of St. Martin, its patron saint. European traditions consider this Catholic saint to be the patron saint of vintners and wine growers and, in many countries, new wine is “baptised” on this very day.

Momjan, a small historical town north of Buje, is no exception. It is well known among wine and vine authorities. Situated not far from the Slovenian border, Momjan is an oasis of sweet muscatel, the result of the synthesis of ideal soil and climate over a period of many centuries.

When we realize that this town and its environs conceal some of the most prominent names in the Croatian wine-selling business, names that long ago made their reputation with Malvasia and Teran wine, the scale and importance of this event become apparent.

In wine-tasting sessions held in cellars, a wide range of wines are laid out for guests who, armed with drinking glasses, savour the top-quality wines of North-western Istria.

Vetrina Muskata, an international festival that attracts dozens of muscatel wine makers from Istria, Italy and Slovenia, is part of the St. Martin’s Day celebration. The best wine makers receive medals and the title of Muscateer, a symbol of top accomplishments and great achievements in the unique art of making muscatel wine.

    9th Olive oil festival

A picturesque place on the southeastern Istrian hills situated on the road between Pula and Labin, which was built in the Middle Ages. Barban is full of cultural attractions as well as of an intangible cultural heritage within which the most famous is the knight\'s game, Trka na prstenac (an equestrian competition in which various horsemen riding at full gallop aim their lances at a hanging metal ring). Besides its rich history, this area conceals a number of other curiosities.

Olive oil, the alpha and omega of Mediterranean cuisine, got its own festival in Barban in 2009.
Olive growers exclusively from the area of Barban take part in this event and besides the tasting of extra virgin olive oils, workshops on the theme of olive growing are also organised.

The November Festival in Barban is worth a visit not only for the exhibition of souvenirs and the interesting usable items made of olive wood, but also for the works of artists who find the olive an endless source of inspiration.

    Trail race

Join trail running enthusiasts and support the Giro di Monte Grande event which will be held on 10.12.

Running is the simplest form of exercise. All you need is the will, the equipment is practically already there, as well as the location. Location needs to be near to you, suitable length of the track and it’s important to relax and enjoy the running. One of those can be found in Pula, in the part of the town called Veli Vrh which is situated by the Partizanski put (Partisan way) road. Start of the race is on a jogging trail with parking space where you can find a tangle of trails and paths from which you  can choose the suitable profile and length of your training.

Along the road you will come across Austro-Hungarian fortress, a quarry, olive groves, vineyards, meadows with horses, sheep ... and if you let yourself enjoy in nature you will discover the part from which the view goes all the way to the Brijuni and Brijuni coastal area ... enjoy…as we already have experienced it.

Lim Bay Challenge: Sunny Winter Trail

In that moment when winter knocks on our door and the first snow covers the mountain tops, we invite you to descend to the sea and enjoy the benefits of the Mediterranean climate, running along the Lim bay and the Vrsar hinterland on a two-day event called Lim Bay Challenge - Sunny Winter Trail.
The central venue is Camp Portosole near Vrsar, Istria.

On Saturday, December 16 2017, there are two categories on schedule - Sunny and Fun&Run, while on Sunday, December 17 are Urban category and Kids Trail Run (race for the youngest).

Competitors of the Sunny category are going to be transported by buses to the start - the famous medieval fort of Dvigrad, whose walls are going to be the starting point of the race. The finish line is at Camp Portosole. The Sunny category is a classic hardcore trail race with 900m uphill and 1000m downhill on the 29 km track. The track is abundant with exceptionally beautiful sceneries, which, together with the mentioned Dvigrad, include the most beautiful viewpoints from which you can see the Lim Bay. The terrain itself is an interesting mix of Mediterranean rocky trails, forest of Kontija and coastal woodland.

The Urban category (16km +250m), scheduled for the second day, is a kind of soft trail variant intended for classic trail runners as well for those who prefer road and urban running. The difference between the classical road running is that the Urban category along the standard asphalted roads includes a multitude of slopes and macadamas through thematic and classic parks and tourist camps, and unforgettable stairs in the old city cores. The track moves along the shore of Camp Portosole to the north and passes through the old town of Vrsar, a quarry beneath it, several campsites by the sea, the Sculpture Park Dušan Džamonja, the town of Funtana, and then returning to the finish at Camp Portosole.

Fun & Run category (10km +150 m) is designed as a recreational race for all who want to spend a day in nature and enjoy easy walking and jogging.

Kids Trail Run category is intended for children of preschool and school age up to 14 years.

For the contestants in categories Fun&Run, Urban and Kids Trail Run start and finish will be at Camp Portosole.

Beside winners in overall and female competition in each category, the winners of the overall weekend event in overall and female competition will be announced. Times from Sunny and Urban categories will be summed up in the spirit of the stage race and the winner will be the competitor with the best time.

    Parenzana Trace Walking Tour

    Sport event

115 years ago, on December 15, 1902, a train covered the route between Buje and Poreč for the first time, driving along the at the time new narrow gauge railroad Parenzana. It was thus that the second section of the railroad previously connecting Trieste and Poreč was put into operation. With the total length of 123 kilometres, it wound through the green istrian landscapes, connecting 33 Istrian settlements.

Over the last ten years, parts of Parenzana were transformed into a hiking and bicycle trail, unique for the viaducts, tunnels and railway stations preserved along the route, dating back to the time when it was daily thundered through by a small locomotive.

Commemorating the 115th anniversary of the first train ride between Buje and Poreč, the Tourist Board of the Town of Buje is organizing a hiking campaign from Buje to Grožnjan and back, along the restored route of the Parenzana.

The start is in front of the old railroad station in Buje at 10 a.m. and trail-side refreshments are ensured for all participants.
