    Truffle Days in Istria

The truffle is the supreme delicacy that had been enjoyed by the Mesopotamian rulers 4000 years ago, and it is still one of the most prestigious foodstuffs in world gastronomy. This intense flavour royal mushroom was known to the ancient Greeks and the Roman emperors, and it was also served at the French court and among the Austro-Hungarian aristocracy. It is very rare and it grows only in several locations in Europe - in some parts of France and Italy and in Istria, favoured by mild climate, small temperature variations and grey clay soil.

The white and the black truffles have their natural habitat in the Istrian truffle \'Bermuda\' triangle between Pazin, Buje and Buzet, especially in the valley of the river Mirna and in the Motovun Forest. They grow underground, and they are searched after by specially trained dogs.

October is the top season of the white truffles, which are also the most expensive and the most valuable truffles. At that time, numerous events are held every weekend to celebrate this indisputable king of mushrooms in Livade, the well-known truffles centre near Motovun. But, even before and after this period, throughout most of the autumn, Istria lives in the rhythm of truffles with the abundance of festivities dedicated to this noble mushroom.

The guests that come from the whole region are presented with the typical truffle dishes: fuži, pljukanci, gnocchi, fritada and various meat combinations. There are also many exhibitions and fairs, with plenty of excellent opportunities to meet the world of this magic, aromatic tuber known for its aphrodisiac features.

    Zigante Truffle Days

    Truffle Days 2017

In the heart of the Motovun forest, one of the most important areas for harvesting the white truffle in Istria, Zigante Tartufi Days are being held each year. This long manifestation is being held over ten weeks during autumn.

That is expensive tuber that is literally measured in grams of gold like a magnet for visitors, according to local and foreign guests from Slovenia, Italy, Germany, Austria and even distant Japan, who are constant visitors to this unique project.

It was this event celebrated the Livade as a world center of the Istrian white truffles, and turned this place into a single marketplace, only one of its kind in the country.  Truffle Fair and Exhibition is an ideal opportunity for exploring and tasting truffles and its presentation.

In addition to the absolute king of Istrian cuisine, here you can find other indigenous products, which in its tradition and quality attract interested tasters and consumers from around the world: wine, olive oil, cheeses, honey, brandy-herb and other traditional Istrian products.

The gastronomic offer is the result of collaboration with the best wineries and olive oil. For all visitors entering the fair is free of charge.

    Opening hours:
    16.IX - 29.X: 10:00 - 19:00 every weekend

The Great War in the Adriatic

    Exhibition

The exhibition "The Great War in the Adriatic", usually located at the Gallerion Museum in Cittanova, now also present in the halls of the Brtonigla Museum.
At the official headquarters of the Gallerion Museum, he exhibited the exhibition about the birth and development of the Austro-Hungarian Navy until the beginning of the First World War, while in the Brtonigla Town Museum with 180 photographic panels and numerous original finds, for the first time in history will be presented in chronological order the naval war in the Adriatic Sea.

It could have all ended up diff erently. The tourist season of 1914 had been the best until then. Economy was bursting.

Everyone expected an improvement in the living standards of the lowest social classes in the Monarchy. Instead, the worst possible option, the war, was chosen. The character of the confl ict is well described by its name – the Great War. It lasted four years and left behind 17 million dead and more than 20 million injured without reaching any of the goals set. It happened what nobody among those who had begun it expected. Four big empires have collapsed; the German, the Astro-Hungarian, the Russian and the Turkish. They dissolved into a number of new national states. Some of them were unsustainable geopolitical entities such as newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, predecessor of recently dissolved Yugoslavia that also ended its existence with a war.

This exhibition aims to present, for the fi rst time in Europe, the Great War at sea in all its aspects. Through this exhibition we are trying to faithfully convey to the public this immanent tragedy through 300 panels and 300 naval models as well as with numerous original objects and documents. The exhibition will be set up at three locations in Cittanova and Brtonigla.

Naval operations in the Mediterranean and in the Adriatic, despite the preponderance of the Triple Entente fl eet, have been conducted almost until the end of the confl ict. The Adriatic coast remained free of confl ict and has been spared from military invasion until the

entry of the Italian troops after the armistice. Through the whole war, the Imperial and Royal Navy provided, in spite of all the diff iculties, including the disobedience and rebellion of sailors due to the poor living conditions, social abandonment and national disengagement,

a reliable defence of the coast and off ered support to own forces at the South Eastern and on South Western theatre of war. After the dissolution of the Empire, its Navy virtually disappeared, while its fellow citizens become citizens of new state entities.

Eventually, these geopolitical, unhappy and unjust divisions of nations, new frontiers and new spheres of interest, led to a new, even greater tragedy: the Second World War.

The tradition of the Austro-Hungarian navy has been in some forms preserved in a newly formed Navy of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats then passed on through successor Yugoslavia and then eventually to its successor states. While the golden years of the Austrian

presence at the sea ended in 1918, its exceptionally rich heritage has survived to this day and can be observed in various ports and port buildings, in high quality shipbuilding, maritime training, nomenclature (especially in the navy), tourism and cultural heritage

(e.g. the fortifi cation system in Pula). Ports such as Trieste, Pula and Rijeka have developed during the Austria-Hungarian period, and much of modern coastal infrastructure was built during that time. Numerous Adriatic lighthouses, these guardians and caretakers of

the seaside, sailors’ friends along our coasts and islands, are particularly solemn and mystical witnesses of that era of great captains, sailors and ships, as well as of the glorious navy.

Taking into account all these circumstances, our desire and our main aim is to set up an International Naval Museum to present and preserve this rich heritage. We believe that only multinational and multi-ethnic representation and interpretation of the past events

can provide solid foundation on which we can build our future.

    Sole Fish Days

    Gastronomic event

Repeatedly, north-western Istria captivates guests with its intoxicating tastes and scents, hidden places and events.

If you are spending time here during the autumn, take the opportunity of trying our wide range of dishes based on sole. This high quality white fish is locally called "švoj", hence the name of the event.

Lasting almost an entire month, the Sole Fish Days takes place in the many restaurants and wine cellars of Umag, Novigrad, Buje and Brtonigla. Here you will find three-course meals based on sole, served with quality wine and olive oil from the region.

The sole has thus become an inspiration, encouraging cooks to try out new creations and combinations. Chefs reach for the stars and let their imagination run wild, raising the gastronomic experience to new levels - all in the name of this noble fish, characteristic of the north-western part of the Istrian peninsula.

The sole shines in all its glory, bringing a new dimension to the intricate weave of Istrian culinary.
    Enjoy your meal!

Celebrating the feast of St. Maurus, the protector of the city, citizens of Poreč are organizing various commemorative events, and among many is Polenta Festival, with its gastro-entertaining content for all the citizens but also interesting to guests that happen to visit the city in this winter period.

    9th Olive oil festival

A picturesque place on the southeastern Istrian hills situated on the road between Pula and Labin, which was built in the Middle Ages. Barban is full of cultural attractions as well as of an intangible cultural heritage within which the most famous is the knight\'s game, Trka na prstenac (an equestrian competition in which various horsemen riding at full gallop aim their lances at a hanging metal ring). Besides its rich history, this area conceals a number of other curiosities.

Olive oil, the alpha and omega of Mediterranean cuisine, got its own festival in Barban in 2009.
Olive growers exclusively from the area of Barban take part in this event and besides the tasting of extra virgin olive oils, workshops on the theme of olive growing are also organised.

The November Festival in Barban is worth a visit not only for the exhibition of souvenirs and the interesting usable items made of olive wood, but also for the works of artists who find the olive an endless source of inspiration.

Start of the race is on a jogging trail with parking space where you can find a tangle of trails and paths from which you  can choose the suitable profile and length of your training.

Along the road you will come across Austro-Hungarian fortress, a quarry, olive groves, vineyards, meadows with horses, sheep ... and if you let yourself enjoy in nature you will discover the part from which the view goes all the way to the Brijuni and Brijuni coastal area ... enjoy…as we already have experienced it.

Lim Bay Challenge: Sunny Winter Trail

In that moment when winter knocks on our door and the first snow covers the mountain tops, we invite you to descend to the sea and enjoy the benefits of the Mediterranean climate, running along the Lim bay and the Vrsar hinterland on a two-day event called Lim Bay Challenge - Sunny Winter Trail.
The central venue is Camp Portosole near Vrsar, Istria.

On Saturday, December 16 2017, there are two categories on schedule - Sunny and Fun&Run, while on Sunday, December 17 are Urban category and Kids Trail Run (race for the youngest).

Competitors of the Sunny category are going to be transported by buses to the start - the famous medieval fort of Dvigrad, whose walls are going to be the starting point of the race. The finish line is at Camp Portosole. The Sunny category is a classic hardcore trail race with 900m uphill and 1000m downhill on the 29 km track. The track is abundant with exceptionally beautiful sceneries, which, together with the mentioned Dvigrad, include the most beautiful viewpoints from which you can see the Lim Bay. The terrain itself is an interesting mix of Mediterranean rocky trails, forest of Kontija and coastal woodland.

The Urban category (16km +250m), scheduled for the second day, is a kind of soft trail variant intended for classic trail runners as well for those who prefer road and urban running. The difference between the classical road running is that the Urban category along the standard asphalted roads includes a multitude of slopes and macadamas through thematic and classic parks and tourist camps, and unforgettable stairs in the old city cores. The track moves along the shore of Camp Portosole to the north and passes through the old town of Vrsar, a quarry beneath it, several campsites by the sea, the Sculpture Park Dušan Džamonja, the town of Funtana, and then returning to the finish at Camp Portosole.

Fun & Run category (10km +150 m) is designed as a recreational race for all who want to spend a day in nature and enjoy easy walking and jogging.

Kids Trail Run category is intended for children of preschool and school age up to 14 years.

For the contestants in categories Fun&Run, Urban and Kids Trail Run start and finish will be at Camp Portosole.

Beside winners in overall and female competition in each category, the winners of the overall weekend event in overall and female competition will be announced. Times from Sunny and Urban categories will be summed up in the spirit of the stage race and the winner will be the competitor with the best time.

    Parenzana Trace Walking Tour

    Sport event

115 years ago, on December 15, 1902, a train covered the route between Buje and Poreč for the first time, driving along the at the time new narrow gauge railroad Parenzana. It was thus that the second section of the railroad previously connecting Trieste and Poreč was put into operation. With the total length of 123 kilometres, it wound through the green istrian landscapes, connecting 33 Istrian settlements.

Over the last ten years, parts of Parenzana were transformed into a hiking and bicycle trail, unique for the viaducts, tunnels and railway stations preserved along the route, dating back to the time when it was daily thundered through by a small locomotive.

Commemorating the 115th anniversary of the first train ride between Buje and Poreč, the Tourist Board of the Town of Buje is organizing a hiking campaign from Buje to Grožnjan and back, along the restored route of the Parenzana.

The start is in front of the old railroad station in Buje at 10 a.m. and trail-side refreshments are ensured for all participants.
